A gentler way

Outpatient stereotactic breast biopsy is less invasive, with little or no scarring

When a mammogram reveals a suspicious breast lesion, women face a surgical procedure to remove a sample of tissue for testing. But now, some patients will have a less invasive option.

Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital is offering stereotactic breast biopsy. The state-of-the-art procedure is less invasive as well as less costly. Only local anesthesia is necessary, and women report little or no pain. Patients return home the same day – with no scar to mark the site of the operation.

And the results are just as accurate as with a traditional biopsy.

Surgeon Charles Goldstein will be performing the procedure.

“It’s not nearly as invasive,” said Bill Monts de Oca, director of radiology at Shore Memorial Hospital. “You’re a lot more geometrically perfect with your positioning.”

Special Xrays help guide a hollow needle to the precise location of the breast lesion. Samples are removed for further examination. Overall, it's less invasive than an operation.

Still, the procedure isn’t right for everyone. Each patient should consult with their doctor to determine whether stereotactic or surgical biopsy will yield the best results.
